This is not your average surfboard shaped from foam but one with a environmental cause behind it. Surfer, Taylor Lane has seen first had the effect of littered trash on the beaches he loves to surf. It was this and the “Creators and Innovators Upcycle Contest” that inspired Taylor to craft a surfboard out of discarded cigaret butts.
The Surfrider Foundation holds a contest every year where contestants are challenged to make a surfboard out of “upcycled” material or in other words material that was once discarded but is now being used with a new purpose. Taylor Lane was inspired to enter the competition in 2016 with his cigaret surfboard.
After scavenging for thousands of butts, Taylor picked the tobacco out and began shaping the board with a wooden structure. Though the first test drive was unsuccessful as the board soaked up water. After taking it back to the shaping room, Taylor made some adjustments and the “roach tail” was back in action.
