Can you imagine life without color?

Color blindness affects approximately 1 in 12 men (8%) and 1 in 200 (.5%) women in the world. Most color blindness is inherited, although there are several diseases and certain traumas that can cause it.

As of now, there is no permanent correction of the condition currently available. But thanks to a company called EnChroma, they offer correction for the most common type, red-green color blindness.

In red-green color blindness, the shades of red and green are not accurately perceived, because red and green bands of color overlap in the brain.

Color blindness handicaps a rich experience of life – one that most of us enjoy through the world of 100,000 colors. A person who is color blind may only perceive one-tenth of those colors.

The scientists at EnChroma have worked to enhance the experience of color and shades of color by interrupting and removing some of the shaded color wavelengths from the spectrum of light that enters your retina, thereby interrupting and reducing the amount of red-green overlap the wearer perceives.

EnChroma Cx is a type of sunglass that does not dull color, but one that enhances color. The EnChroma Cx is made strictly for people with color blindness; however, the company makes a regular pair of sunglasses, the EnChroma UV450 Receptor, which blocks the sun’s rays, but brightens your color experience.

The EnChroma Cx is meant to be used in outdoor light, but can function well with certain indoor lighting, such as florescent lighting.

The image below shows how an outdoor scene might look to a color blind person without sunglasses, with regular sunglasses, and with the EnChroma Cx sunglasses.

The company is beginning to focus on helping kids, a particularly in-need population because so much information in schools is shared visually. According to EnChroma’s vice president, Don McPherson, only 11 states test kids in schools for color blindness.

You can take a test here to test for color blindness. I took the test, and was surprised that I have “normal color vision” – God knows I’m blind. I was able to see the hidden shape in nearly all of the test conditions. You can order a pair of EnChroma Cx sunglasses which range in price from $325 to $450. Know more.
