A drop in vehicle sales may be the wurst of Volkswagen’s problems. Volkswagen, a company known for being the “peoples automobile” is surprisingly making more in sales from an unusual product. You guessed it, weiners! Right under everyone’s nose for over 40 years, Volkswagen has been making currywurst sausages in Germany.
The currywurst sausages are all stamped with a brand that says, “Volkswagen Originalteil” or “Volkswagen original parts” in German. Coming in two sizes, 12.5 cm and 25 cm, the currywurst even includes its own spiced curry ketchup. Volkswagen calls it their “most popular product without wheels”.
While car deliveries have fallen in sales by 5%, the currywurst output has soared 14% and sold nearly 7.2 sausages in 2015 alone. It is also common to receive a gift of sausages after buying a VW in Germany, and the sausages are available to prospective clients and at corporate marketing events. The weiners are doing so well, they even created a vegetarian option.
